Elle's Kitchen

Ellen Gordon is the owner of Elle’s Kitchen – a fresh and modern café on Moorside Street, Droylsden. Ellen has a varied menu of tasty, freshly cooked food and great coffee.

Coming from a legal background, Ellen is very much compliance led and committed to getting things right from the start.

When Ellen bought the café, the first thing she did was completely renovate it, to ensure it was meeting the very best hygiene standard. During the renovations, Ellen began to look at the legislation related to running a food business and that’s where Tameside Council’s Business Compliance Support Officer, Helen, came in. Helen had emailed Ellen shortly after registering as a new food business, to offer food hygiene guidance and advice.

Ellen saw Helen’s email and decided to get in touch for support as she was worried about meeting the legislation requirements. Helen visited the premises to chat with Ellen where they spoke about the importance of a food safety management system and ensuring that everything is correctly documented.

“Helen talked me through and simplified the legislation, and she pointed out the most important parts. Helen really helped and made a difference – she made the process much calmer and helped make sure there were no sleepless nights over it. 

I was a bit worried at first about having the inspection, but Helen helped to break down any feelings of resistance. I know now that they’re there to help and I can ring Helen or the Environmental Health team if I’ve got any issues, and we can work together to put things right.

I’m very proud of getting a 5 star rating. I’m all about the community and having the top rating means I can be confident that I’m serving the community safely – Helen has been integral in that. Not only that, but it’s helped me to create a relationship with another local business, and those type of relationships are key to improving the community.  It goes further than the here and now as well, I think about the longer term impact – one day this business will be my children’s so I want to make sure it’s a success for that reason too.
