The Basil Greek Souvlaki

The Basil Greek Souvlaki is a family run restaurant offering traditional Greek cuisine in Boothstown, Salford. Serving all of the Greek favourites from souvlaki to seabass to moussaka and baklava, the authentic eatery has been awarded the top FHRS rating of 5 by Salford City Council.

Owner Isuf Beca and partner Julianna have done a fantastic job of transforming the restaurant into a modern and welcoming space, which ticks all of the food hygiene regulation boxes.

Isuf is well versed in the food industry having worked in a variety of restaurants throughout his career, including 5* hotels, however he’s spent a few years away from the food trade so when Nicola, Salford Councils Business Compliance Support officer, contacted him shortly after he registered as a new food business, he was pleased to find that support was available to help refresh his knowledge. While Julianna was completely new to the industry, owning their own restaurant is a dream that has become reality, so the support that came next was invaluable. 

“When Nicola first spoke to us we were still in the process of renovating the building. She had a look over the place and gave us some advice including having an extra sink and a tap specifically for the mop – that’s turned out to be very useful. We also didn’t have a splashback on the wall so she advised about that and it’s those types of things that helped to give us a good start. It would’ve been frustrating if we’d only found out about them after the inspection.

We cook our food in the traditional way which means we have a charcoal grill, so that meant we have to have carbon monoxide alarms and that’s something we’d not thought about before. We want to make sure that people feel safe to eat with us and we know that we’re doing everything to make sure that’s the case now. I [Julianna] am a very organised person and I look after all of the paperwork so it was helpful to find out about the Safer Food Better Business pack which makes recording everything so much easier.

We were so happy to get a 5 in our inspection. We’ve invested a lot into the business so we want to make sure we’re doing everything we can keep it going well.
