Mamma Julie's
Julie McKee is the proud owner of Mamma Julie’s, a welcoming café in Ashton-Under-Lyne’s indoor market. The new café is quickly becoming a firm favourite of locals, with new and repeat customers on a daily basis. The menu includes all the classic breakfast dishes along with a range of toasties, sandwiches and specials, plus some enticing cakes and sweet treats.
Julie initially interacted with Tameside Council’s Business Compliance support officer Helen over a year ago when she began as a home caterer, offering comforting home cooked meals via Just-Eat. Mamma Julie’s could be described as a dream turned into reality - she attended catering college some years ago but then went on to have a career in sales and marketing. She decided to dive into the food industry in early 2024 and is going from strength to strength after expanding into a seated cafe in the popular Ashton Market.
After being awarded an FHRS rating of 5 by Tameside Council when working from her specially built home kitchen, Julie is feeling confident about the upcoming food hygiene inspection in the new location.
Thankful for the ongoing support provided by Helen, Julie explained “when I was starting out I wasn’t really sure what I needed to do so I began by contacting the local authorities to find out. That’s when Helen got in touch, first she sent some emails with information about everything I needed to have in place and then she phoned me to follow up. It definitely made me feel more comfortable and I kind of ticked off everything that she advised on as I went along. She told me about the Safer Food Better Business pack which is what I use to record everything. I think what Helen does is great and when I decided I was going to move into the market I gave her a ring to give everything a once over which was a great help. She’s very helpful and I recommend the service”.
